Notes

1.An unusual variant of y. See ETE 2, Paleographic Chart 7 for similar variants from pottery inscriptions.

2. The -i medial stroke is engraved on the ledge above the stone bed.

3. piṭṭantai. pi(ṭ)ṭaṉ and pi(ṭ)ṭantai occurring in near-identical adjacent inscriptions (65 & 66) are variants of the same name. See ETE 2, Commentary (66.2).

4. makaḷ 'daughter'. cf. kuṟum makaḷ ' young daughter' (65).

5. atiṭṭāṉam. Identified by M.D. Sampath during our field work in 1991. The expressions paḷḷi and atiṭṭāṉam refer respectively to the 'cave' and 'stone bed' as indicated by the location of 65 & 66.

6. See ETE 2, Commentary (66.2) on the identification of Piṭṭantai. See also Section 4.5.2.
